“The companies that respect data are those that clients will trust”
I’m Dom Newton, and I’ve been working in privacy and data protection since 2008. I’m a self-confessed privacy geek, and have worked in global organisations in financial services, technology, consumer goods and services and, originally, in the UK charity sector, bringing privacy together with excellent communication, risk management and compliance experience.
Privacy, data and AI have now grown into a major industry, and the role of the Privacy Officer or DPO has moved from an informal option to an invaluable and in some cases compulsory part of top management.
While governments continue to regulate, developments continue to outpace lawmakers, with courts and regulatory bodies attempting to pre-empt the next move. The privacy expert is at the heart of that, helping companies to navigate through in a way that maintains trust, integrity and pragmatism.
My aim as a privacy leader in this fast-paced environment is to help translate privacy and data protection into everyday messages that teams and organisations can understand, and that build trust with customers and employees through ethical and transparent use of data.
I’ve built and managed small, expert teams providing expert advice across all aspects of Privacy compliance and risk management. Along the way, how we communicate and talk about privacy and data protection has become central to our way of working. Whether training teams and boards, or designing policies and notices, clarity is key to building understanding
Privacy pro
I’ve worked with and for some of the largest businesses in their markets, including world-leading technology and security companies, consumer financial advice, fund management, large-scale veterinary, and one of the largest charities in the UK.
I’ve also supported schools, community groups and local councils in understanding how privacy law affects them, and interacts with key issues like safeguarding, good governance and risk management.
As part of that journey, I’ve been privileged to work alongside a network excellent lawyers, fellow privacy geeks and thinkers, both in-house and external, and was immensely proud lead a small in-house team that, in 2022, was short-listed for Best Privacy Culture Improvement alongside giants like Google, British Airways and Lidl at the PICASSO awards.
I have held privacy and data protection qualifications since 2008 and am a Fellow of Information Privacy with the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP).

The private life of me.
Away from work as a privacy geek, I live in Wiltshire with my partner and (between us) four rapidly growing boys. It can be loud and a bit crazy, but I enjoy finding ways to feed them, and helping them to grow and develop as rounded and respectful young men.
My youngest is Type 1 Diabetic, which has been a huge challenge for him, and means I am immensely grateful for the work of our local NHS team, and fantastic organisations like Breakthrough T1D, and Diabetes UK.
I greatly enjoy photography, with (excepting the portrait above) all of the photos on this site coming from my own portfolio. You can see more of my work over on Pixieset. I also play various instruments, to various standards, and love cooking.
